Impossible Science Festival Weekend

Have you ever wanted to experiment with the science of invisibility? Or make objects levitate? There are ways to make the seemingly impossible become possible with science.
Join Jason Latimer, the Fleet’s Curator of Impossible Science, as he hosts a two-day Impossible Science Festival in the Fleet exhibit galleries!
The Impossible Science Festival will feature hands-on demos of things that are supposedly impossible, like invisibility, levitation, animation and super powers!
Most exciting of all, we’ll also have a giant pool of strange, squishy Oobleck. Adventurous souls such as yourself can have an opportunity to walk across an impossible substance. More>>
The Impossible Science Festival takes place on Saturday & Sunday, August 22 & 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the upstairs gallery of the Fleet.
 
Please note: Admission to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23, includes access to all of the Impossible Science Festival activities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as the Fleet’s interactive exhibits, including CIRCUS: Science Under the Big Top, and one IMAX® film. $21.95 adults, $19.95 seniors and $18.95 children 3-12. Children ages 2 and younger receive free admission.


 

3D Printing Coming to the Tinkering Studio

The Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is excited to introduce 3D printing to the Tinkering Studio! Use Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) techniques to design your own toys and structures, then watch as a 3D printer creates your model right before your eyes.3D printing has helped spark the Maker Movement and revolutionized the way objects are made and designed worldwide.
The workshop is available for ages 13+. Pricing for the three-session workshop is $80 for Fleet members and $90 for nonmembers. More>>

Suds & Science: The Life & Death of Bees

You’ve heard of Colony Collapse Disorder, but what is it exactly? How damaging is it and what can be done about it?Join us for this month’s Suds & Science, as the Fleet welcomes bee keeper Mari Jarvis and Dr. Heather Bell from UCSD as they discuss the life and death of bees and what we can do to support a healthy bee population.
The event takes place at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park. Tickets are $10 and include 2 beers from Mother Earth Brewing Company. More>>

Retro T-Shirt Design at Saturday Science Club for Girls

At the next Saturday Science Club for Girls, we’re going to learn about chemistry and the science of color chromatography by making tie-dyed T-shirts!
Bring your own white shirt to decorate and a retro frame of mind.
Girls in grades 5-8 can join the Fleet on the second Saturday of each month to investigate exciting science topics. More>>

The Sky Tonight: Year of the Dwarf Planet

If you were as fascinated by the Pluto Fly-By as we were, this month’s live planetarium show is for you!
Led by astronomer Dr. Lisa Will, the Sky Tonight will highlight the discoveries of the Dawn and New Horizons missions by NASA and the two dwarf planets they have recently visited, Ceres and Pluto.

Meet Scientists at Your Favorite Pub

On Thursday, August 20, we’re sending 50 scientists out to 25 bars all over San Diego County to enjoy a beer, conversation and answer any questions you may have about science. Our scientists will be easy to spot. They’ll be next to a sign that says, “We’re scientists, ask us anything.”
Chosen by San Diego Magazine as one of the “27 Reasons to Love San Diego,” Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar is a fun community program organized by the Fleet. The full list of bars is on our website, plus listings of the specialties of each participant so you can be sure to visit the scientist best suited to answer your questions.
