Meteor Shower of the Decade Tonight! Thur, 8/11 + Fri, 8/12/16

Meteor Shower, Perseid, PopularMechanics

Astronomers predict next week’s meteor shower will have twice as many meteors as normal.  If you find yourself outside during the night next Thursday, don’t forget to look up.

On August 11 and 12, the biggest meteor shower of the year, the Perseids, will be lighting up the night sky, and this year the Perseids promise to be the best shower of the decade.

The Perseids typically peak in mid-August every year, when the Earth intersects with the trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. Debris from the comet impacts the Earth’s atmosphere and streaks across the sky, creating shooting stars.

Typically, the Perseids’ peak features about 100 meteors per hour. But this year, we may see twice that many thanks to an “outburst,” which occurs when the Earth runs into leftover debris from past orbits of the comet as well as debris from the current year. The extra material combines to create a truly spectacular meteor shower.

This year, the Perseids are expected to contain meteors from comet trails laid down in 1862, 1479, and 1079. This means that some of the meteors that will impact Earth’s atmosphere next week broke off from the Comet Swift-Tuttle nearly a thousand years ago.

If you’re planning to watch the Perseids, it’s best to be prepared. The optimal time to see the meteor shower is from late at night on Thursday August 11 to early Friday morning on the 12th, before sunrise. Be sure to get plenty of rest if you’re going to stay up late to watch the show.

Pick a spot that’s far away from city lights that brighten the sky. The darker the sky, the better the viewing, so you may have to drive into the countryside. This tool can help you find a dark sky location nearby. Remember to give your eyes at least 20 minutes to adjust to the dark.

Most importantly, enjoy yourself and have fun! Meteor showers are always better with people, so bring some friends or loved ones along, and keep your eyes on the sky.

Two galaxies, known collectively as Arp 87, distort as their gravitational fields interact. The larger of the pair, NGC 3808, is drawing stars, gas, and dust from the smaller. Both galaxies are spiral-shaped and located about 300 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Leo.

Evidence Discovered of New Planet Forming

Evidence of forming planet discovered 335 light-years from Earth

The new planet would be an uninhabitable gas giant at least three times the size of Jupiter, and the distance from the star would be about the same distance that Saturn is from the Sun.

P. Marenfeld & NOAO/AURA/NSF
An international team of scientists led by a Clemson University astrophysicist has discovered new evidence that planets are forming around a star about 335 light-years from Earth. The team found carbon-monoxide emission that strongly suggests a planet is orbiting a relatively young star known as HD 100546. The candidate planet is the second that astronomers have discovered orbiting the star.Theories of how planets form are well-developed, but if the new study’s findings are confirmed, the activity around HD 100546 would mark one of the first times astronomers have been able to directly observe planet formation happening.

New discoveries from the star could allow astronomers to test their theories and learn more about the formation of solar systems, including our own, said Sean Brittain from Clemson University in South Carolina.

“This system is very close to Earth relative to other disk systems,” he said. “We’re able to study it at a level of detail that you can’t do with more distant stars. This is the first system where we’ve been able to do this.

“Once we really understand what’s going on, the tools that we are developing can then be applied to a larger number of systems that are more distant and harder to see.”

For more than a decade, the team has focused some of Earth’s most powerful telescopes on a disk-shaped cloud of gas and dust that surrounds HD 100546.

The star is about 2.5 times larger and 30 times brighter than the Sun, Brittain said. It’s in the constellation Musca the Fly and can only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere.

HOW TO HELP MOST EFFECTIVELY AFTER A DISASTER

The media attention that often follows an international disaster brings about a compassionate response from Americans. However, many are not sure of how they can best support the efforts of groups and governments responding in a crisis. This page offers recommendations on the most appropriate ways any of us can help. In almost every situation, cash donations are better than donated goods or services for reasons outlined below.

For specific information on current needs, visit our Current Crisis List page for a list of events to which InterAction members are responding and links to their websites on how you can help.

 Why Cash is Best

The best way to help is to donate financially to organizations responding to a disaster. Cash allows relief professionals to procure exactly what is needed in a disaster situation and ensure that donations are culturally, dietary, and environmentally appropriate. Cash donations do not use up other scarce resources, such as transportation, staff time or warehouse space. As needed, cash can also be transferred quickly to where needed, helping bolster the economy of the disaster-stricken region.

 Do Your Homework

Take the time to thoroughly research the organization to which you intend to donate. Treat this as you would any other investment. Beware of scams and if giving online, be sure you are on the designated site for that organization.

Material Donations

Material donations from individuals consist of new or used items that are donated to a relief effort. If you do decide to donate materials rather than cash, then there are steps you can take to ensure that your donation is made in such a way as to benefit the affected people while avoiding some of the problems often associated with donated material. The most important step when donating materials is to contact an established, professional relief organization before you collect anything. If you have already collected materials to donate, it can be put to their best possible use—and have the greatest impact economically—if donated to local charitable organizations within your own community or sold in a charity auction/yard sale with the proceeds donated to the disaster relief organization of your choice. (Advertising it as a yard sale to support the victims of a disaster might increase turnout.)

Volunteering

In the aftermath of humanitarian crises, it is critical that the response of the international community is immediate and well-coordinated in order to save as many lives as possible.

  • Volunteers are asked to have previous disaster or international experience or technical skills (for example, medicine, communications, logistics, water/sanitation, engineering), and are usually from neighboring communities not affected by the disaster.
  • Well-intentioned foreigners, lacking technical skills, disaster experience and familiarity with the local culture and language, can seriously complicate relief efforts.
  • Those with technical skills or international experience who would like to volunteer should register with the Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) after reading this page.

In light of the earthquake/tsunami disaster in Japan, pls consider how you can help – perhaps a dollar or two, perhaps a simple email or letter of kind, thoughtful support to those affected. As a retired scientist, I am appalled at what I know will be an unimaginable long road ahead of the Japanese people towards recovery not only in rebuilding their homes & businesses, but also in the long term affects this will have on both their physical & emotional health and happiness. Pls consider what small, kind contribution you too can make. Remember, nobody is too small, nobody is too big to help!
For more info, pls see this website: http://www.usaid.gov/
