You know you’ve come across the work of the late artist Niki de Saint Phalle because you first think, “What the heck is that?” Then you say, “Hmmm, it’s kinda cool looking.” And then you always smile. Invariably, while you’re processing all of this in some intellectual manner, there are children climbing up, over and through the sculpture pieces. Her work is unique, indeed.

You’ve probably seen de Saint Phalle’s public work here in San Diego, especially if you frequent Balboa Park. A few years back, the Mingei Museum hosted several of her whimsical sculptures, which often sort of kind of represent animal/human characteristics, and are painted in bright colors and often utilize mosaic or mirror tiles as well. Two of her pieces stand permanently in front of the Mingei, as well as one in front of the Hall of Champions.

De Saint Phalle’s San Diego works also include the famous Sun God piece on the grounds of UCSD, which first brought the artist notoreity in this area back in 1983. She also has a piece, Coming Together, at the San Diego Convention Center. The artist has public works of art all over the world.

So, it might be kind of a surprise that Escondido’s Kit Carson Park, of all places, is where you’ll find the only American sculpture garden and the last major international project by Niki de Saint Phalle (she died in 2002). It’s called “Queen Califia’s Magical Circle Garden,” inspired by California’s mythic, historic and cultural roots.

Tucked away in the sprawling Kit Carson Park, the sculpture garden, which opened in 2003, is located in the Iris Sankey Arboretum area of the park. The garden consists of nine large-scale sculptures, a circular “snake” wall and maze entryway, sculpturally integrated bench seating, and native shrubs and trees planted within the interior plaza and around the perimeter.

The centerpiece is the 22-foot Queen Califia and Eagle Throne, where you’ll often find people sitting within the bird’s legs, just enjoying the whimsical setting. The circular snake wall welcomes you into the garden, and as you navigate the mosaic maze, you deposit into a plaza of an array of totems, all bearing the unmistakable stamp of the artist.

“Queen Califia’s Magical Circle Garden” is a wonderful spot to disappear into and escape into a magical and fanciful world, even if only for a brief moment. And even amid the bustle of Kit Carson Park’s picnic areas, playgrounds and ballfields, you can discover a little bit of solitude and artistry tucked away in this quiet corner.

“Queen Califia’s Magical Circle Garden” is located in Escondido’s Kit Carson Park. From I-15, take Via Rancho Parkway to Mary Lane, and follow the signs.

Hidden San Diego – Free Tuesdays in Balboa Park

Believe it or not, there are still things in life that feed the mind and soul and are free. And no, I’m not talking about the beach. I’m talking about Balboa Park, and if you’ve never stepped foot in any of the Park’s wonderful museums and art galleries, well, you ave no excuse not to.

Because I’m gonna let you in on a little secret: you can get in for free. Yes, I said FREE. As a public service to San Diego, most of the Park’s museums and galleries offer free admission on Tuesdays every month. Now, as a disclaimer, not every venue is free each Tuesday: the Park rotates them on each Tuesday, so certain museums are free on certain Tuesdays of the month. Also, be forewarned, the free admission typically applies only to the venue’s permanent collections, not any special event, attraction or exhibit which may be in process at the time of your visit.

Nevertheless, it’s a great opportunity to acquaint yourself with some culture in the city’s jewel of a park all for the right price. Here is the schedule of free admissions for each month, subject to change:

First Tuesday

      Centro Cultural de la Raza

      Natural History Museum***

      San Diego Museum of Man
      Japanese Friendship Garden ***
*** Free to San Diego County Residents and Active Military only Mingei International Museum

Fourth Tuesday

San Diego Air & Space Museum***
San Diego Automotive Museum (last admission 3:45pm) ***
      San Diego Hall of Champions***

*** Free to San Diego County Residents and Active Military only

Fifth Tuesday

      Normal museum prices in effect.
The Timken Museum of Art is always free.

Note:  Some museums may offer complimentary admission to their permanent collections only and charge admission to special exhibitions or films. Strollers are NOT allowed in the San Diego Natural History Museum during Residents’ Free Tuesdays.

Top 10 Places to Discover in Balboa Park

No one will dispute the fact that Balboa Park is San Diego’s unmistakable jewel – 1,200 acres of greenbelt, culture, recreation, and attraction. It is San Diego’s community gathering place, enjoyed by all citizens, of all walks of life and economic backgrounds. Sure we all know about the great museums and the Old Globe Theatre, but Balboa Park is much more than that. I know, everyone has their favorite Balboa Park spot, but here are a few known, and less known, places to discover in Balboa Park.

1. El Prado

The main thoroughfare of Balboa Park, El Prado is the “downtown” of the park, where the public gathers and strolls to enjoy the magnificence of Balboa Park’s beauty and architecture. Accented by the Spanish Moor-influenced buildings, remnants of the 1915 and 1935 World’s Fairs, El Prado is the picture postcard spot of San Diego where you’ll find most of the park’s cultural venues: the Old Globe Theater, San Diego Museum of Art, Museum of Man, Natural History Museum, Museum of Photographic Arts, Mingei Art Museum. When you stroll down El Prado, seeing how everyone is enjoying the park, you realize how much Balboa Park means to both residents and visitors alike. El Prado is a must for anyone needing to feel invigorated about living in San Diego.

2. The San Diego Zoo

I know, it’s a pretty obvious selection – when you’re in San Diego, you visit the San Diego Zoo. But the Zoo is as much a part of Balboa Park, even though it’s separated by an admission gate. At the same time, Balboa Park is home to one of the world’s greatest zoos, with one of the most extensive and unique collections of animals and plants found anywhere. The exhibits and animal enclosures are innovative, especially Elephant Odyssey, Lost Forest and Polar Rim. And, of course, there are Giant Pandas. That alone gives you reason to check out the San Diego Zoo. More »

3. Balboa Park Carousel and Railroad

If you’ve been to the San Diego Zoo, then you have likely noticed the nifty carousel and miniature railroad outside of the Zoo entrance plaza. The 1910 Balboa Park Carousel is a menagerie of animals and all but two pairs are original with hand-carved European craftsmanship. Also original are the hand-painted murals surrounding the upper portion of the carousel and the military band music. This carousel is one of the few in the world still offering the brass ring game for everyone taking the 5-minute ride. The Balboa Park Miniature Railroad takes a 3-minute, ½-mile trip through four acres of Balboa Park. The train, operated by the San Diego Zoo Department of Transportation, is a model G16 – now a rare antique with as few as fifty currently remaining.

4. Botanical Building

As you walk along the El Prado section of Balboa Park, you’ll notice the Lily Pond first, and then the curious lattice structure of the Botanical Building. In fact, the view of the Botanical Building with the Lily Pond in the foreground is one of the most photographed scenes in Balboa Park. Built for the 1915-16 Exposition, along with the adjacent Lily Pond, the historic building is one of the largest lath structures in the world. Inside you’ll find more than 2,100 permanent plants, featuring fascinating collections of cycads, ferns, orchids, other tropical plants, and palms. And don’t forget to check out the Carnivorous Plant Bog.

5. Balboa Park Activity Center

Some sports might not initially seem like they are popular participation sports. But if you were to wander over off the beaten path of Balboa Park near the site of the old Naval Hospital, you can check out some fierce competitors in badminton, table tennis, and also volleyball. The Balboa Park Activity Center is a 38,000 square-foot multi-purpose gymnasium built to accommodate those gymnasium sports that the basketball-centric Municipal Gym across Park Blvd. can’t accommodate. Located at 2145 Park Blvd. and set amid beautiful landscaping, public art and spacious outdoor plazas, the Balboa Park Activity Center is a first-class sports facility.

6. Model Railroad Museum

This list purposely doesn’t include Balboa Park’s museums because they are such known attractions. Except maybe this one: the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. Tucked away in the Casa Del Prado, the museum isn’t always noticed by visitors heading to the Natural History Museum or the Fleet Science Center. But if you want to see something cool, you’ll want to make a detour here. At 28,000 square feet, the museum is the world’s largest operating model railroad museum. This unique museum contains four enormous scale and model layouts, built by separate clubs, which depict railroads of the Southwest in O, HO, and N scales. In addition, the San Diego Model Railroad Museum features a Toy Train Gallery with an interactive Lionel layout for children and state-of-the-art theater lighting.

7. Lawn Bowling Greens

If you’ve ever been on the west 6th Avenue side of Balboa Park, near the Cabrillo Bridge, you might have noticed a congregation of people dessed in all white rolling things on a smooth, flat lawn. That, my friends, is the San Diego Lawn Bowling Club conducting matches. Organized in 1932 with five founding members, the San Diego Lawn Bowling Club is still going strong with active members. Club membership is open to anyone with an interest in the game. And level of club involvement can range from playing in the occasional club social game, to participating in club tournaments, to competing in high-level regional and national competition. Sitting and watching the games is very calming, but at the same time you realize there is a level of skill involved. And if your curiosity is such that you want to give lawn bowling a try, club members gladly give the public lessons.

8. House of Pacific Relations International Cottages

I always wondered why Balboa Park’s House of Pacific Relations Internal Cottages included representative countries like Denmark, England, Sweden, France and Germany – pretty far from the Pacific Ocean. Then I found out that “pacific” means “peaceful.” Duh. Now it all makes sense – these cottages represent and promote peaceful education and cultural exchanges to the public. Housed in historic 1935 Exposition cottages, 32 groups promote multicultural goodwill and understanding through educational and cultural programs. Every Sunday, throughout the year, if you wander through the cottage complex between the Organ Pavilion and the Air and Space Museum, you might learn a thing or two of a foreign country during an event or presentation.

9. Morley Field Sports Complex

A lot of people don’t realize or just forget that Balboa Park extends beyond Park Blvd. east across Florida Canyon. You won’t find museums or theaters here, but you will find a whole lot of recreational opportunities at the Morley Field Sports Complex. Frisbee golf? Track cycling? Tennis? All found here. Located at Texas and Upas Streets in the northeast corner of the Park, this complex offers a vast array of sporting activities from tennis, swimming and archery to disc golf, bocci ball and velodrome cycling. Four athletic fields (one lighted), a two-mile jogging trail plus an 18-station fitness course are part of the complex as well.

10. Spanish Village Art Center

Tucked between the San Diego Zoo and the Natural History Museum is one of my favorite places to just sit and enjoy the arts and crafts taking place. It’s a unique courtyard of art shops called the Spanish Village Art Center. Thirty-seven working artist studios/galleries host over two hundred independently juried local painters, sculptors, metalsmiths, jewelry designers, clay artists, gourd artists, photographers, printmakers, fiber artists, basket weavers, mixed-media artists, glass artists, and more. The historic Spanish-tiled buildings, the colorful patio tiles and the working artist studios all make for a very creative setting.

Hidden San Diego – Footbridges of Banker’s Hill and Hillcrest

You would only come across them if you live in the neighborhood, and the old footbridges of Hillcrest and Banker’s Hill give these neighborhoods a unique and special character. Learn how you can discover this part of Hidden San Diego.

Spruce Street Suspension Bridge

Of all the footbridges found in Banker’s Hill, the Spruce Street bridge is by far the most unique and the best. Why? Because it’s a suspension bridge – the kind of bridge that sways with the weight of those crossing it. Built in 1912 and designed by Edwin Capps, this special bridge which spans Kate Sessions Canyon is one of those secrets that you just have to share after discovering it.

The only bridge of its type in San Diego County, this 375 foot steel suspension bridge is almost inconspicuous as you walk west along Spruce Street just west of First Avenue. As you start crossing, you realize the bridge actually bounces, then sways as you continue walking. It’s a little scary, and way cool. A real treasure. More »

Quince Street Footbridge

One of the few remaining trestle bridges in San Diego County, the Quince Street bridge was built in 1905. The 236-foot long bridge spans Maple Canyon and connects Fourth and Third avenues. Orignially built for $805, the bridge suffered from dry rot and termites and was slated for demolition in the late 1980s.The bridge, which offers a great view of the canyon 60 feet below and the city skyline, was deemed a city landmark and was given a second. It re-opened in 1990 after a $250,000 renovation, still retaining 30% of its original wood. It’s a classic wood trestle neighborhood landmark. More »

Vermont Street Footbridge

Some of us remember when there was a huge Sears Roebucks store in Hillcrest for years. And just behind the store was a wood trestle footbridge behind the store that spanned busy Washington Street and connected Hillcrest and University Heights along Vermont Street on either side. Built in 1916, the original structure was destroyed in 1979 because of rotting timbers. In 1995, a new, steel bridge was built and it incorporated public art with laser cut panels of pictographs and quotations. The Sears is long gone, and in its place is the popular Uptown residential and retail complex. Now a trek across the handsome bridge from University Heights takes you right to Trader Joe’s. More »

Upas Sreet Footbridge

While most of the Hillcrest/Banker’s Hill footbridges are hidden gems unbeknownst to most San Diegans, one of them is an especially hidden secret. The Upas Street footbridge isn’t as readily known, even to residents in the immediate neighborhood around Balboa Park. But it is well worth seeking out. Why? Because the bridge connects the meandering bridal trail that winds throughout the Park. The dirt trail is used by hikers, joggers and riders along some of the most idyllic and scenic areas of the Park. Built in 1946, the bridge spans Cabrillo Canyon across State Route 163 connecting the trail near Upas Street on the Sixth Avenue west side of the Park. Note: it is advised to avoid crossing this bridge at night due its isolation. More »

Best San Diego Neighborhoods for Dog Owners

San Diego Neighborhoods for Dog Owners

If you’re looking for a San Diego apartment with your pooch, you’ve got to be near some open space where Fido can frolic! Beaches, hiking trails, cafes and even some stores in the best San Diego neighborhoods welcome four-legged friends, so there’s no question that this SoCal metropolis loves its furry pals. With near-perfect weather and stunning landscapes, San Diego locals–and their pups–don’t like to be cooped up for long. Follow our guide for the best San Diego neighborhoods for dog owners, and you’ll never have to venture far to let your pooch enjoy the wind in its fur.

Pacific Beach

Tucked along the western edge of the mid-coastal region of the city, Pacific Beach is just steps away from one of the best locales for you and Fido to live in San Diego! Fiesta Island is a massive, off-leash dog park with a small bay where your pooch can pounce around in the water. Need some human-friendly attractions near your new San Diego apartment? This neighborhood is known for its unbelievable dining options like Enoteca Adriano, Rocky’s Crown Pub and Pacific Beach Fish Shop. Pacific Beach is also considered a “Very Walkable” neighborhood by WalkScore, so you’ll have no trouble finding sidewalks and paths to take Fido for a jaunt.

Hillcrest

Hillcrest is one of the up-and-coming communities in the broader Uptown San Diego region. Boasting plenty of amenities, nightlife and recreational options, you’ll find tons of stuff to do within steps of your apartment. Plus, this neighborhood is along the outskirts of the city’s most beloved attraction: The historic Balboa Park. It’s the largest urban park in the country, and is home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo and 85 museums and cultural institutions. Dog-friendly Grape Street Park, Nate’s Point and Morley Field are all located in and around Balboa park, so you’ll be able to find plenty of spots to toss around a flying disk with your furry friend! And Hillcrest received a whopping 84 from WalkScore to boot.

El Cajon

Technically located along the outskirts of San Diego, El Cajon is home to Wells Park, a leashless dog park that sprawls for 1.4 acres. There’s no better place in East County for your furry friend to roll around in the grass and play fetch. This neighborhood received a score of 61 from WalkScore, so you also won’t have any trouble taking your dog for a stroll through the neighborhood.
